Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania and Morocco, are countries that host a significant number of refugees and asylum seekers displaced by conflict across the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa. The four countries in the Maghreb are at the crossroads of mixed and onward movement of refugees and migrants, which can result in high-risk, life-threatening journeys. In this context, they remain important destination, departure and transit countries at the heart of the Central Mediterranean route. UNHCR continues to pursue long lasting, sustainable solutions that allow refugees to build their lives in safe and dignity across the region. Regular pathways for safe, orderly and regular migration along the migratory routes are fundamental to create alternatives to dangerous journeys, in line with a whole-route approach.
