Launch of the Voluntary Repatriation of Congolese Refugees from Batalimo refugee camp to DRC

On 10 April 2014 , UNHCR Representative, Mr. Kouassi Lazare Etien, and the Central African authorities : a Representative of the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, of the Ministry of Health, social Affairs and Humanitarian Action , the National Commission for Refugees (CNR) and the Prefect of Lobaye, launch together the program of the voluntary repatriation of Congolese refugees settled in the Batalimo refugee camp ( Lobaye prefecture).

More than 6,000 refugees (representing 1,550 families) originating from the Equateur province in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) expressed their desire to be repatriated in DRC. They had fled the insecurity in their home country in 2010 and found refuge in the Batalimo camp. A first group of 300 people left the camp Batalimo on 10 April 2014 to back home in Libenge, Province of Equateur , where they welcomed by UNHCR team. The operation of voluntary repatriation will continue over the next three weeks with the support of the National Commission for Refugees in Central Africa (CNR).

UNHCR, together with its implementing partners, support nearly 16,500 urban and rural refugees in Central African Republic, mainly from the Congo (DRC) and Sudanese , through a multi-sectoral assistance and durable solutions. Since the beginning of 2014, UNHCR has also implemented a program of emergency voluntary repatriation for urban refugees. Since January 2014 to date, more than 680 refugees, mostly Congolese (DRC), Sudanese and Chadian have been repatriated.
