The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) says it spent over $7 million in 2014 as support to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Nigeria.

It is estimated that of the over 1.5 million IDPs, only 868,235 are officially registered. UNHCR adds that of that figure 2,557 are refugees of mixed nationalities.

The UN Refugee Agency Nigerian Representative, Angele Dikongue-Atangana who disclosed this in Abuja explained that the amount represents about 24 percent funding with an additional 76 percent funding gap still required.

According to the UNCH Representatives to Nigerian, “the urgent needs of the IDPs still remain water, shelter, sanitation, protection and health services.”
The security situation in north-east Nigeria remains very volatile with every passing day recording more attacks by insurgent group, Boko Haram.

The intensity ha further impacted on the already limited humanitarian response by aid agencies. Internally Displaced Persons, therefore, continue to ne in dire nee of assistance and support.

Dikongue-Atangana noted the Refugee Agency’s concern over the continued restriction of IDPs to their informal camps.

“As part of its humanitarian response, UNHCR will begin to aid NEMA in registering IDPs so that their needs can be better identified and the quality of assistance being provided to them can be improved,” she said.

According to her, UNHCR has already established a presence in Bauchi State to efficiently coordinate assistance and protection services in the six conflict-affected north-eastern states of Borno, Yobe,Adamawa, Gombe, Taraba and Bauchi, where large of the civilians have fled their natural homes to seek refuge in surrounding towns, rural communities, and public buildings, courtyards and open fields.
