The Federal Government has assured that Nigerian military had launched a serious offensive against the Boko Haram militants in its efforts to reclaim Baga and other parts of Borno State that had come under the control of terror sect.

Coordinator of the National Information Centre, Mr. Mike Omeri, said this in a statement on Friday in Abuja, 'There has been intense fighting between security forces and Boko Haram in some parts of Borno State, especially Baba, over recent days. Since the first attack last weekend on Baga, security forces have been actively pursuing the militants.

'On Wednesday, a group of militants conducted a second terrorist attack on the area, leaving casualties and destroying property. Security forces have responded rapidly, and have deployed significant military assets and conducted airstrikes against militant targets.

'These brutal and barbaric attacks by Boko Haram represent none of the people of Nigeria and no religion. Our security forces will continue to pursue the perpetrators of these heinous acts. We will stop Boko Haram, and we will bring to justice those responsible for the brutal violence being perpetrated against the people of Nigeria.'

According to him, the National Emergency Management Agency was providing comprehensive humanitarian support to 2,000 Internally Displaced Persons from Baga at its secure facility, the Teacher's Village Camp.

Omeri's submission is however contrary to the accounts of the lucky escapees of the community, who recounted that the terrorists, who had invaded Baga, overrunning the military base in the town on Saturday, raided and subdued the town on Wednesday while no soldier was sighted in the town during the sustained attack.
