The Nigerian Army in its continued offensive operations, has destroyed some remnants of Boko Haram terrorists’ camps and enclaves around Alagarno and Sambisa forests in Borno State.

The Director of Army Public Relations (DAPR), Col. Sani Usman, in a statement wednesday, confirmed that the troops of 81 Battalion and 251 Task Force Battalion patrol team, on Tuesday, cleared Boko Haram camps located at Komala, Dole, Kumshi and Moadori around the fringes of Alagarno forest.

Usman disclosed that the troops killed two of the terrorists and captured another two “notorious terrorists; Mustapha Busuru, 50 and Usman Abubakar, 56 at Dole village and brought down the flags they hoisted in the village.”

“They also recovered two Toyota pick up vans, 40 motorcycles, equipment for making Improvised Explosives Devices (IEDs), stockpile of foodstuffs and fuel dump. The patrol team also recovered horses and donkeys used for transportation by the terrorists,” he stated.

The DAPR said in response to a distress call of an attack by Boko Haram terrorists on Kuda village along Butuku road, troops of 143 Battalion swung into action, “unfortunately the terrorists fled after setting the village on fire that led to the death of an elderly woman.”
According to him, the escaped insurgents regrouped and attempted to cross through Magar bridge but they were pre-empted by soldiers of the battalion who killed two terrorists and wounded several others.

Sadly, he added, three soldiers and four locals sustained injuries, while the troops recovered a Toyota Buffalo vehicle mounted with an anti-aircraft gun with registration number 081375, one General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) with registration number 132042, a loaded G3 rifle magazine and 30 rounds of 7.62mm (NATO) ammunition link.

Usman said both the solidiers and the wounded civilians are receiving treatment at the unit’s Regimental Aid Post.
Meanwhile, the United States Army has commenced the training of 250 Nigerian soldiers on counter-terrorism as part of efforts to bring an end the activities of the Boko Haram terrorist group in the North-east.

The first phase of the training which kicked started at the Nigerian Army School of Infantry (NASI), Jaji, near Kaduna, had soldiers drawn from the 145 Battalion of Nigerian Army and is expected to last for 12 weeks.

Speaking at the event, US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle, noted that Nigeria alone cannot fight terrorism and called on other nations to join hands with Nigeria in the fight against insurgence.
“We need to work together to rebuild the North-east. We are two great democracies and with many great things together,” Entwistle said.

Also speaking, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, ordered the troops of the ‘Operation Zaman Lafiyan Dole’ which is bombarding the Boko Haram and liberating territories to consolidate on the successes already recorded.

According to him, renewed efforts were being made to clear the remnants of the Boko Haram members in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States.

He however said the process was becoming difficult as the insurgents were mixing with civilian populace.

The army chief maintained that contrary to opinions in some quarters, the continued onslaught against Boko Haram by the Nigerian military had degraded the capability of the group, adding that all that is required from the bold action of troops is to hold liberated territories.

“As you are aware, the security challenges that have confronted the Nigerian Army in contemporary times are remarkably different from the ones we have in the past.

“So I implore you to work hard towards achieving the goals of this training. I am confident the US Training team with the support of the Commandant and Instructors of NASI are prepared to give you the highest quality of instruction.

“While striving hard to rid our land of terrorism and activities of insurgents, we remain committed towards strict observance of human rights and international humanitarian laws through educating our troops via rules of engagement and code of conduct manual for each operation” Buratai said.

Also in his remarks, the special guest of honour at the event, Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Abayomi Olonisakin, noted that the partnership between the US Army and Nigerian armed forces was borne out of shared commitment to counter terrorism and violent extremism.
