The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has said the federal government is committed to relocating Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) back home.
He said the creation of North-east development commission would address the plights of IDPs nationwide.
Dogara spoke while receiving two trucks of anti-malarial drugs and assorted materials from the Malaria Care Foundation at the IDPs camp in New Kuchigoro, Abuja, Thursday.
He said the priority of the government was to relocate IDPs to their communities.
He said: “The successes recorded in the ongoing war has resulted into some of the IDPs returning to their community. Our gallant troops are fighting and have been able to recover and reclaim all the territories under the control of Boko Haram and, in no distant time, you will be able to go back to your community.”
He said it was the responsibility of the government to make them feel comfortable “because it is the failure of government that drove you to this place.”
The primary objective of government was to secure the lives of its citizens, he said.
“Had it been the government had done that, you will not be here today. We will not continue to lament the failure but address this challenge,” he said.
He said if created, the proposed North-east development commission would address the plights of IDPs and integrate with their communities.
He commended Malaria Care Foundation for the donation, saying they have brought wealth to the people.
In his remarks, the Director-General of the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Abbas Idriss, said the number of the IDPs in the territory had reduced to about 15, 000 across 31 camps.
While commending the foundation for the donation, he said some of the IDPs had returned to their states while 4,000 IDPs who had indicated their interest to return home would be returned soon.
The country coordinator of Malaria Care Foundation, Hajiya Jasmine Dalhatu, said items donated included assorted materials, 528, 480 paper insecticides, 62, 820 mosquito killers and 20 cartons of germicide.
