A seminar on internal peace and constitutional amendment will be organised next month by ethnic political alliances in Thailand’s Mae Sot, located across the border at Myawaddy.
Seminar organisers include the United Nationalities Federal Council, the United Nationalities Alliance, the National League for Democracy the 88 Generation Peace and Open Society and the 1990 elected candidates.
Each organiser will send a five-member delegation to the seminar.
“We, the United Nationalities Alliance, are desirous of making discussion on charter change and drafting of the new constitution. We can seek ways and means of pushing the constitutional amendment through the discussion. We think our efforts will be effective as the NLD, 88 Generation and the 1990 elected candidates will be involved in the discussion,” said Aye TharAung of the United Nationalities Alliance.
“The 88 Generation was invited by the United Nationalities Federal Council to participate in the discussion. Our group led by KoKoGyi comprises five members. The discussion will last for two days in Mae Sot. The peace process will be on the agenda,” said Jimmy of the 88 Generation.
At present, the NLD and the 88 Generation have been holding public rallies in support of charter change in the whole country. The UNA formed by ethnic parties is also cooperating for constitutional amendment.
“As far as I know, five organisations have already been invited. We will mainly meet top figures from these organisations including the NLD. The ethnic relations committee formed by the NLD will come to the seminar,” said Colonel KhunOkkar, the joint secretary-general (2) of the UNFC.
NLD chairperson Aung San SuuKyi is concurrently in charge of the party’s ethnic relations committee.
