Negotiations over the final draft of the ceasefire agreement between the National Ceasefire Co-ordination Team and the Union Peace-Making Working Committee will be held in about two weeks’ time, said U Hla Maung Shwe of the Myanmar Peace Center on August 3.

U Hla Maung Shwe spoke to Mizzima after the end of a meeting, held at government offices in Myitkyina between representatives of the two sides aimed at finalising the arrangements for the full ceasefire talks.

“Both sides showed positive intent, so we hope that this coming draft may be the final version, or at the very least, the second to last,” said U Hla Maung Shwe.

He addedthat the exact date for the talks was yet to be finalised but they would likely be held towards the third week of August and the MPC in Yangon would once again hostthe summit.

Nai Han Thar, vice chairman of the Nationwide Ceasefire Co-ordination Team told Mizzima that the purpose of the pre-summit discussion held on August 3 was for both sides to understand the other’scurrent position.

Dr Lian Sakhong, the NCCT representative of the Chin National Front, told Mizzima that there were hopes that the final ceasefire agreement could be complete within two months.
