Initial result of nationwide census to be announced on August

The government will announce initial results from the first nationwide census in 30 years at the end of this month, with data on population and development indices released first, according to Ministry of Immigration and Population.

Population, family registeration lists, data collectors and regions will be included in the initial release of information.

“We are adding the data taken after June 15. Now we are checking the data initially collected. We will announce the initial result in this month. We will know how many number of population to be increased since the last time we took census. We will learn other development. They will not be included in the initial result. We will announce the data which is clear to understand,” said Director General Myint Kyine from the Ministry of Immigration and Population.

The census is start collected on March 30 with the help of over 110,000 data collectors for 11 milion households in 14 states and regions and a union territory.

The 2014 nationwide census is for the first time in Myanmar after 25 years. The last census was collected in 1983. The census is collected with four steps; preparing in advance, collecting field data, gathering data and publicizing the data, statement from Ministry of Immigration and Population.
The census is started one month early in remote areas. Although the government assigned 12 days to finish collecting census, the time is increased to two months because there were left to collect census in conflict areas and areas where ethnic armed groups based.

The census cannot collect at some places in Kachin State and some Bengalis in Rakhine State didn’t fill in the kind of race. They will be added in initial result of census.

In Kachin State, the census is not collected in 97 villages of 25 village tracts out of 2,700 villages. In Sittwe, Mrauk-U and Maungdaw districts, Bengalis asked their race name to fill in at census, said Deputy Minister for Win Myint in a parliament session on July 25.
Deputy Minister said they can collect census in areas where ethnic armed group such as Kayin, Mon, Paos, Shan, and Kayah based in addition to Wa and Kokant regions where the previsous census couldn’t collect.

Moreover ethinc organizations protested against asking 40 questions while collecting data and making to fill in race name as code numbers. The census commission will disucss with ethnic organizations in data related with ethnics after the result is announced and will announce races and race names in detail.

The Ministry of Immigration and Population will announce population and race names in first quarter of next year as a final result and the reviews of nationwide census will be announced annually starting from November, 2015.
