Fifth ceasefire negotiation makes 26 agreements

Yangon, 17 Aug— The Union Peacemaking Working Committee (UPWC) of the government and the Nationwide Ceasefire Coordination Team (NCCT) made 26 agreements out 31 paragraphs in the draft agreement discussed during the fifth meeting from 15 to 17 August.

UPWC and NCCT make 26 paragraphs in draft ceasefire agreement during a three-day negotiation
in Yangon. Pho Htaung under the chapter 3, the guarantees of political dialogues under the chapter 5, the working process during the negotiation period under the chapter 6 and the general issues under the chapter 7.

Dr. Salai Lian Sakhong, an advisor to the NCCT said: “The draft ceasefire agreement is very fundamental for future political dialogues. So, President and Commander- in-Chief of the Defence
Services are required to sign this agreement. The signatories from our side will be chairmen or eneral
secretaries of respective armed groups.

The three-day meeting discussed the remaining facts from the negotiation in May, and could make
agreements on many conflicting issues. Another ceasefire meeting will be held in September 2014.
Naing Han Thar, leader of NCCT, said: “I want to convey a good message to the people under 60-year civil war that we could sign the nationwide ceasefire agreements soon to continue political dilogues.”
