Myanmar's Constitutional Amendment Implementation Committee is expected to submit its report to the parliament in the first week of October, recommencing its meeting on Sep 4 in Nay Pyi Taw, according to Dr. Aye Maung, the second leader of the Rakhine National Party.
The report will include the reviews and discussions of the committee members, not representing its final decisions on the constitutional amendment, says MP Aung Kyi Nyunt, a committee member on behalf of the National League for Democracy (NLD).
“We will discuss about the report [at the meeting]. A draft will be created when we made final decisions on the report after discussions. The parliament will make a draft amending it reflecting the decisions on which part of the constitution be amended,” said Aung Kyi Nyunt.
The petition campaign to amend Section 436 of the 2008 Constitution jointly organized by NLD and the 88 Generation Peace and Open Society had gathered 5 million signatures nationwide.
Dr. Aye Maung said MPs from the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party as well as military MPs will attend to the petition which gathered five million supporting signatures which would influence the lawmakers as well as the parliament after a draft is in process at there.
“The first meeting of the 31-member committee discussed about the Chapter 12 which includes Section 436, from the beginning. There might be any force on the committee for what to do with the Section. We already discussed about it before the campaign. It will depend on whether there are any differences between the desire of five million people and the initial discussions of the committee at the meeting. I can say there are not so much,” Dr. Aye added.
