NCCT and UPWC Stop Sixth-Round Peace Talks Early on Second Day

After only two days of their five-day peace talks complete, the Nationwide Ceasefire Coordination Team (NCCT) and the Union Peace-Making Working Committee (UPWC) still have many differences and have yet to reach several agreements, according to NCCT leader Nai Hongsar.
“On the first day, no agreements were reached. In regards to what to do after a nationwide ceasefire, we proposed to form a Code of Conduct for the army to respect and practice, and to form a joint-monitoring group. But, on the government side, they said this needs to be discussed only after inking the ceasefire agreement,” said Nai Hongsar.
On the second day of talks, the NCCT refused to accept the UPWC’s proposal to submit the ceasefire agreement reached to the Union Hluttaw (Parliament), according to Nai Hongsar. In addition, the NCCT’s proposal to form a Union Army was also rejected by government army leaders. The peace talks stopped early September 23rd before the day’s agenda was concluded, according to Myanmar Peace Center (MPC).
Fourteen UWPC representatives attended the sixth-round of peace talks, including UWPC’s Vice-Chairman U Aung Min, Vice-Chairman U Thein Zaw as well as UWPC members Lt. Col. Thet Naing Win, U Khin Yi, U Than Htay, Lt. Col. Myint Soe, Lt. Col. Khin Zaw Oo, Lt. Col. Ye Aung, U Htun Htun Oo, Col. Kyaw Soe Win, U Saw Htun Mya Aung, and Min Yin Chan.
For the NCCT, representatives in attendance included NCCT leader Nai Hongsar of the New Mon State Party; Padoh Kwe Htoo Win of the Karen National Union; Maj. Gen. Gun Maw of the Kachin Independent Organzation; Dr. Lian Sakhong of the Chin National Front; Daw Saw Mya Yarzar Lin of the Arakan Liberation Party; Col. Htun Okker of the Pa-O National Liberation Organization; Khun Toereh of the Karenni National Progressive Party; U Twan Zaw of the Arakan National Council; Ta Aik Nyunt of the Wa National Organization; Sai Ba Tun of the Shan State Progressive Party; Lt. Col. Kyaw Han of the Arakan Army; Maj. Tar Wom Jain of the Ta’ang National Liberation Army; and Maj. Saw La Mon of the Lahu Democratic Union.
