In June 2024, a total of 2,066 Burundian refugees from 693 households were voluntarily repatriated mainly from Tanzania to their home country of Burundi. Among the returnees, children made up more than half, with 1157 repatriated. A dditionally, 327 persons of Congolese nationality were granted refugee status. From January to June, a total of 1649, asylum seekers obtained refugee status in Burundi. Furthermore, as of June 30th, Burundi hosted 87 142 refugees. Of these, 55 587 were living in the five refugee camps and 627 in the Musenyi Refugee Site located in Giharo commune, Rutana Province. The remaining refugees reside in urban areas mainly in Bujumbura.
