Since late 2024, security and humanitarian conditions in South and North Kivu have deteriorated, causing civilian casualties, mass displacement, and violations of International Humanitarian Law. Looting and restricted access have hindered aid, leaving many without basic services. UNHCR urges respect for civilian safety, humanitarian access, and freedom of movement. Over 62,000 asylum seekers have fled to Burundi since February 14, needing protection. UNHCR supports Burundi in aiding new arrivals. Pre-crisis, DRC had 6.7 million IDPs, 520,000 refugees, and 1.1 million abroad.
