Gawilan refugee camp, established in 2013, was initially opened to accommodate Syrian refugees from northeast Syria as other camps reached full capacity. The camp was expanded in October 2019 and again in 2023 to receive additional Syrian refugees who were previously accommodated in Bardarash Transit facility. UNHCR supports the Ministry of Interior’s Directorate of Migration and Crisis Response (MoI/DMCR) which has sub-contracted the Barzani Charity Foundation (BCF), to manage and coordinate services for the camp.
