Africa is the region most affected by forced displacement resulting from conflicts and violence. Large-scale and protracted crises are affecting the development of over 46 million displaced people and of their communities of origin and refuge. The number of refugees, asylum seekers and internally displaced people (IDPs) on the African continent has grown almost five-fold over the past 15 years, from 9.1 million in 2009 to 45 million in 2024.1 Complex and multipronged pressures, including the effects of climate change, acting as aggravating factors and threat-multipliers, undermining the resilience of displaced people and of their host communities, are likely to continue driving more displacement, if unaddressed.
