UNHCR Burundi - DRC Situation Update - 31 Jan 2026

Langue(s): English
UNHCR commends the Government of Burundi for its leadership and solidarity following the influx of over 101,000 people in December 2025, which enabled rapid access to protection, land, and life‑saving assistance at the Busuma site. The strong support of the UN Resident Coordinator, UN agencies, and humanitarian partners has further strengthened the overall response. As of 31 January, 65,129 refugees (13,707 households) had settled in Busuma. Together with ONPRA, UNHCR conducted a fixing exercise to confirm the actual presence of households and improve assistance planning. Among them, 39,843 children—including separated and unaccompanied minors—highlight urgent protection and education needs. Additionally, 9,913 refugees remain in overcrowded transit centres, living in precarious conditions and requiring immediate humanitarian support, especially the most vulnerable.
