In recent years, mixed movement dynamics across Eastern and Southern Africa have evolved significantly, with the routes becoming increasingly interconnected. Multiple organisations including the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the Danish Refugee Council’s Mixed Migration Centre (MMC) have generated a rich evidence base on these trends. Yet, this knowledge often remains fragmented across agencies, methodologies, and geographic scopes, limiting its operational and policy impact. To address this, MMC, UNHCR, and IOM organised a workshop to present the latest data and research on the mixed movements of refugees and migrants and the protection risks they face along the Eastern/Horn of Africa, Northern/Central Mediterranean, Southern, and Western Indian Ocean routes in Eastern and Southern Africa; and to discuss multi-stakeholder responses in mixed movements.
