During the period from 28 August to 11 September 2026, UNHCR and its partners continued to provide protection and assistance to Congolese refugees in Burundi, while facilitating the voluntary return of 2,084 refugees to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, bringing the cumulative number of assisted returns to 18,232 individuals since the beginning of the operation. Essential services in health, protection, education, water, shelter and livelihoods were maintained across refugee sites and return areas, while significant unmet needs remain in staffing, infrastructure, food security and economic inclusion, requiring additional support to sustain assistance and advance durable solutions.
