Libya continues to be the main departure and transit point for departure from North Africa towards Europe. As of 31 May 2017, the Libyan Coast Guard rescued/intercepted a total of 6,243 people in different locations along the Libyan coast. Since 1 January 2017, Libyan local authorities have recovered 331 bodies of people who drowned while attempting to cross the Mediterranean towards Europe. UNHCR through its partner International Medical Corps is present in six health posts at disembarkation points, at Azzwaya, Tripoli (3), Tajoura (Al Hamidiyah) and Alkhums, where it provides medical and hygiene assistance.
