Libya continues to be the main transit point for departure from North Africa towards Europe. As of 31 July 2017, the Libyan Coast Guard rescued/intercepted a total of 8,851 people in different locations along the Libyan coast. Since 1 January 2017, Libyan local authorities have recovered 400 bodies of people who drowned while attempting to cross the Mediterranean towards Europe. UNHCR through its partner International Medical Corps provides medical services, rescue kits and rehabilitation of WASH facilities at six disembarkation points, in Azzawya, Tripoli (3), Tajoura (Al Hamidiyah) and Alkhums.
