Ms. Toku, who is the focal point in the Permanent Mission of Japan for UNHCR activities, visited UNHCR’s operations in Burkina Faso in order to:

Ms. Toku visited the two new refugee sites towards which refugees are currently being re-located: Sag-nioniogo (on the outskirts of Ouagadougou) and Goudebou (on the outskirts of Dori) during which they spoke to the Refugee Committees and Women’s Committees there. During their visit to Goudebou, they also saw up close the arrival of a re-location convoy and could interact with recent refugee arrivals. The visitors also had the opportunity of seeing a Registration Level II Exercise (in Community Center in Zone du Bois, Ouagadougou). Ms. Toku also met with the Diplomatic community based in Ouagadougou (French and American Embassy), UNHCR Partners in Burkina Faso (OCHA, OCADES/Caritas, Plan Burkina, MDM France, MSF France, HELP, Oxfam, Ordre de Malte, CREDO, CRS, IEDA Relief, Croix Rouge du Burkina Faso, UNICEF, WFP and TDH) and local authorities CONAREF’s National Coordinator and the Sahel Governor.

During her visit, Ms. Satoko Toku took great interest in the activities related to resilience promotion as well as to Contingency Planning. She also stated that she was very impressed by the good team spirit in UNHCR Burkina Faso, the good collaboration among UN Agencies on the ground as well as the fact that refugees were very thankful to the host communities, the Burkina Faso Government and the UNHCR.
