ABUJA — Following the takeover of liberated and recaptured territories from the Nigerian military by the Police, as directed by President Muhammadu Buhari, security authorities told Vanguard, weekend, that more than 10, 000 Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, located in seven IDPs camps, in Damaturu, Yobe State, have broken out of camps and returned to their villages under Police protection. Bama IDP Camp: This came as the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, told US Ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power, that 1,934,765 displaced persons were currently living in formal camps, host communities and satellite camps in liberated communities as a result of insurgency in North Eastern states of Borno, Yobe, Taraba, Gombe, Bauchi and Adamawa states. The displaced persons were said to have broken out of the camps en-masse, following the opening of the Damaturu-Buni Yadi-Biu road by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai. The road had been shut for the last four years as a result of the marauding activities of Boko Haram terrorists. Some of the communities they returned to with police protection include Buni Yadi, Giniri, Buni Gari and Gulani among others. Confirming the development in a telephone conversation with Vanguard, Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 12, Bauchi, AIG Ayotunde Ogunsakin, said the IDPs were motivated to embark on the journey back to their homes because of the deployment of police personnel and the required logistics equipment to the North-East states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa. He said: “As the AIG in charge of the zone, I have been visiting the liberated territories randomly. I can tell you that the Police have started taking over control of the affected areas in the North-East. ‘’New officers and men have been posted; equipment and logistics requirements have arrived. We have started taking full control.” 1,934,765 IDPs live in formal camps, satellite camps Meanwhile, 1, 934, 765 displaced persons are currently living in formal camps, host communities and satellite camps in liberated communities as a result of insurgency in North Eastern states of Borno, Yobe, Taraba, Gombe, Bauchi and Adamawa states. This was disclosed by Yola Camp Coordinator, Sa’ad Bello, who, on behalf of the Director General of NEMA, Muhammad Sani Sidi, took the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power, round the facilities at Malkohi IDPs Camp in Yola, Adamawa State, weekend. He said there were 32 formal camps in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states, with a total of 189,783 IDPs. Borno has 19 camps with 150,858 IDPs; Yobe, nine camps with 31,988 IDPs and Adamawa, four camps with 6,937 IDPs.
