The Union Peacemaking Work Committee formed by the government and the Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP) held peace talks for the third time in Loikaw, Kayah State on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The discussions focused on four proposals submitted by the KNPP and three by the UPWC.
Among the seven points both sides have agreed to are beginning a political dialogue on how to reach a nationwide ceasefire, forming a joint monitoring committee with ten members approved by both sides, and enlisting the KNPP to assist in carrying out security for border trade routes.
Other points of agreement are to jointly carry out tasks for landmine disposal, undertake a pilot project for IDPs, and implement regional development tasks.
After the talks, Hla Maung Shwe, special adviser to the Myanmar Peace Center, told reporters that both sides have agreed only on the necessary points. He also praised KNPP representatives for their straightforwardness and honesty. He said that he thought both sides would be well prepared for peace talks to be held in Laiza.
Colonel Phone Naing, permanent central committee member from the KNPP side, and Colonel Zaw Myo Aung, the Minister for Security and Border Affairs from the government side, signed the peace talk records.
