Dozens of Karenni State villages have been informed by the regional government that they will have to pay US$10,000 per village to get a connection to the national electronic grid, DVB reports.

“We plan to bring electricity to 47 villages under this self-sponsorship scheme. Each village will have to contribute an initial payment of 10 million kyat, but that amount will not cover the full cost,” Karenni State Minister of Electric Power Saw Huhu said, adding that the connection costs could rise higher. Some residents of the state in eastern Burma are asked to cover the costs of connecting to the national grid because their villagers are so remote.
