The Karen National Union will sign a new ceasefire agreement with the Tatmadaw within three months, KNU central executive committee member Padoh Mahn Nyein Maung said on June 4.

The agreement came at talks in Nay Pyi Taw between a KNU delegation headed by its chairman, General Saw Mutu Say Poe, and Defence Services Commander-in-Chief, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Padoh Mahn Nyein Maung told Mizzima.

"The Tatmadaw told us they wish to complete ceasefire agreements that cover the whole of the country by August 1; this matched our ambitions and so we made an agreement with the Commander-in-Chief,” he said.

Padoh Mah Nyein Maung said the KNU delegation held talks with President U Thein Sein after the meeting with Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.

He said it was the KNU's fifth meeting with President U Thein Sein and the sixth with the Commander-in-Chief.

Those present at the talks with the President included the Myanmar Peace Center's U Hla Maung Shwe, who said the KNU delegation and U Thein Sein had discussed the possibility of initiating a political dialogue before the end of the year.

In its negotiations with the government's Union Peace-Making Work Committee on a ceasefire accord, the Nationwide Ceasefire Coordinating Team has been urging that any agreement provide for a political dialogue between the two sides.
