The Ministry of Education has responded to criticisms on social media that new civic education textbooks have included the four great religions – Buddhism, Islam, Christianity and Hinduism – by denying it is responsible for the curriculum.

“The texts books are not from our departments. We can only teach with the curriculum approved by the National Curriculum Committee,” U Khine Myae, spokesperson for the Ministry of Education (MoE) told The Myanmar Times yesterday.

In the 2016-17 academic year, the MoE started implementing the new curriculum for kindergarten-level. The new curriculum for Grade 1 will be implemented in the coming academic year and the new curriculum for Grade 2 is still being processed.

The civic education text books are published by the Centre for Diversity and National Harmony (CDNH).

A total of 17 books are published, out of which 11 books are for students from kindergarten to Grade 10, five books are as teacher guides for primary, middle and high levels, and one book is a review for civic education teaching.

In a statement by the CDNH, the centre said it was not compulsory for any schools or organisations to teach civic education.

The MoE was recently criticised by netizens on Facebook for the inclusion of the four religions in the curriculum.
