The Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement will build a drug rehabilitation centre in Hpa-an township in Kayin State and has requested budget from the union government, a ministry spokesman said on Monday.
“There is no drug rehabilitation centre in Kayin State even if it is located near the Thai border border where drug use and trade is rampant,’’ said Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement spokesman U Zaw Min.
“The centre will help drug users in the state and nearby area who want to kick the habit,” he added. “The Ministry of Social Welfare Relief and Resettlement will provide them vocational education so they can save their livelihood.”
Daw Nan Khin Htwe Myint, chief minister of Kayin State, said drug problem is a hidden scourge in the states that not only afflicts individuals but also destroys families.
‘’Most of the people in Kayin State focus on the coal-fired power plants than on the drug user problem,” she said. “They should take care about the drug issue and the government will try to prevent it with the help of the union government’’
The Chief Minister said drug abuse and peace are the main challenges that are impeding development in Kayinn State and the state government has to solve them with the participation of the people.
U Saw Tin Maung, a resident of Hpa-an, expressed concern over the increasing number of people in his community hooked in illegal drugs.
“The rate of drug use among the youth is increasing,” he said. “Some parents whose children have become addicted to illegal drugs are afraid to seek from government agencies because they fear their children would be arrested,” he said.
‘’If the rehabilitation centre will be operational the parents don’t need to worry as they can immediately bring their children to the facility,” he added.
U Kyaw Thu, the chairperson of National Drug User Network Myanmar, said easy access to illegal drugs in the main reason of the increase in the number of drug users in the state.
“The state government should try to stop drug trafficking in Kayin area,” he said.
One of the most abused drug among teenagers, students and men in Kayin is yaba, tablets containing a mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine, which can be bought easity, he said.
Yaba, in particular, is being widely used by children, students and men in Hpa-an as it is not difficult to buy, said Saw Thein Aung, another resident of Hpa-an township.
There are about 30 people every month who come to Hpa-an Hospital with drug problems, authorities said.
