Since late 2024, security and humanitarian conditions in South and North Kivu have deteriorated sharply, with rising civilian casualties, mass displacement, and violations of International Humanitarian Law. Looting and restricted access have crippled aid efforts, depriving many of basic services. Around 63,000 asylum seekers have fled to Burundi since mid-February, needing protection. UNHCR urges respect for civilian safety, humanitarian access, and freedom of movement. Amidst this crisis, the DRC already had 6.7 million IDPs, 520,000 hosted refugees, and 1.1 million refugees abroad, underscoring the urgent need for international support.
