Working Group Description

The WASH sector aims to provide lifesaving water, sanitation and hygiene services to affected populations of the Syrian refugee crisis in camps and most vulnerable communities. The key objectives of the WASH sector in Jordan are: 1) to ensure safe and equitable access to safe water services in sufficient quantity and quality to cover their basic needs (drinking, cooking, personal and domestic hygiene needs); 2) to provide safe, appropriate and equitable access to sanitation and wastewater services; 3) to improve environmental health and climate related awareness through social and behavior change interventions for adoption of key hygiene, water conservation, other climate related practices and social cohesion thus minimizing the risk of WASH related diseases; and 4) to provide technical capacity and institutional support for WASH sector planning, implementation, monitoring and coordination at national and sub-national levels. The priority of the WASH working group partners is to ensure that the minimum requirements and standards for safe water, sanitation, and hygiene are met amongst refugees in camps and the most vulnerable communities. These are based on humanitarian standards such as Sphere, UNHCR WASH and aligned with Jordanian national standards. The WASH working group is chaired by UNICEF and World Vision in close coordination with the Ministry of Water and Irrigation.
