The Government of the Republic of Armenia has shown leadership in responding to the protection needs of refugees in Armenia. While the Government continues to respond to meet the humanitarian and development support to refugees, it is complemented and assisted by the efforts of partners that are coordinated by Deputy Prime Minister’s office with support of UNHCR. UN agencies and INGO/NGOs partners have stepped up their efforts to assist the response by Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Territorial Administration, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, and Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs as well as local authorities. Building upon the commendable initiatives undertaken by the Government of Armenia to integrate refugees while addressing humanitarian needs, emphasize is now on a dual approach that calls for a nexus between humanitarian assistance with long-term integration. By emphasizing the critical balance, coherence, and complementarity between addressing humanitarian needs and promoting sustainable integration, the transition aspires to build resilient communities. Longer-term integration of refugees would entail creating sustainable housing opportunities, access to education, healthcare, and provision of social services. Around 63 percent of the refugees are of working age and their integration into the workforce would require expansion of employment programs and opportunities, enhancing access to finance, and skill development and training. The refugees are currently located in different regions across Armenia, with the highest numbers residing in Yerevan (40 percent), Kotayk (16 percent) and Ararat (11 percent). Anticipating further movement of the refugees and planning for their support remaining challenging.
