Operational Overview
Bangladesh generously hosts close to one million Rohingya refugees from Myanmar, making it one of the largest protracted refugee situations in the world. Following the influx in 2017, the humanitarian community closely worked with the Government of Bangladesh (GOB) to respond to the humanitarian needs caused by the large-scale displacement. Rohingya refugees are hosted in 33 highly congested camps in Cox’ s Bazar District. Since 2021, some 35,000 refugees relocated to Bhasan Char, an island in Noakhali district, as part of a project designed by the Government of Bangladesh to decongest the camps. Bangladesh is not a party to the 1951 Refugee Convention and the Statelessness Conventions but has ratified the main human rights instruments. There is no national legislation in Bangladesh specifically governing the administration of refugee and asylum affairs. The Government manages the Rohingya refugee response through directives, letters and administrative instruments.
